During my master鈥檚 program in Political Science, I had the opportunity to intern at the Quebec Government Office in New York. This experience was both a significant academic and personal milestone, as it allowed me to delve deeply into Quebec's international diplomacy and gain invaluable insights into how regional governments engage on the global stage. Although I did not receive academic credit for this internship, the experience proved to be a pivotal chapter in my educational journey and career aspirations.

The Quebec Government Office in New York operates as an extension of the Quebec government鈥檚 international presence. Its mission is multifaceted: it serves as a bridge between Quebec and the United States, focusing on strengthening economic ties, promoting cultural exchange, and advocating for Quebec鈥檚 interests in various international forums. The office is a crucial player in advancing Quebec鈥檚 interests beyond its provincial borders, facilitating partnerships, and showcasing the province's unique contributions to global issues.

The office鈥檚 activities are diverse, ranging from economic promotion and trade development to cultural diplomacy and strategic advocacy. By engaging with various stakeholders, including governmental entities, businesses, and cultural institutions, the office works to enhance Quebec's visibility and influence on the international stage.

My primary goal for this internship was to gain a deeper understanding of how Quebec plays its cards internationally. Through my work, I learned that Quebec鈥檚 international strategy is not just about showcasing its economic and cultural assets, but also about positioning itself as a key player in global discussions on critical issues.

Quebec鈥檚 focus on strategic areas such as electrification and critical minerals reflects its broader commitment to addressing global challenges. Electrification, for instance, aligns with Quebec's strengths in hydroelectric power and its ambition to be a leader in clean energy solutions. Similarly, the emphasis on critical minerals ties into Quebec's rich natural resources and its role in global supply chains.

Working with various attach茅s in fields such as electrification, critical minerals, and communications allowed me to see how these areas contribute to Quebec鈥檚 international positioning. I participated in research and analysis projects, providing support for the office鈥檚 initiatives and gaining a practical understanding of the complexities involved in international diplomacy and policymaking.

One of the most memorable highlights of my internship was the opportunity to visit the United Nations Headquarters. This experience was a profound realization of the scale and scope of international diplomacy. Attending sessions and observing the interactions among representatives from different countries offered me a firsthand look at the intricacies of global governance and the role that regional governments, like Quebec鈥檚, play in these larger discussions.

Another significant moment was having lunch with Haiti鈥檚 Ambassador to the UN. This interaction was not only a chance to engage with a prominent diplomatic figure but also an invaluable opportunity to discuss the intersections of Quebec鈥檚 international priorities with global issues. The conversation provided insights into how regional governments can build alliances and support broader international objectives, enhancing my understanding of the diplomatic landscape.聽

The financial support from the internship fund was very useful in helping to cover my apartment expenses during my time in New York. This practical benefit allowed me to fully immerse myself in the experience without the added stress of financial constraints. It enabled me to focus on my professional development and contribute effectively to the office鈥檚 work.

Beyond the tangible benefits, the internship contributed significantly to my personal and professional growth. It enhanced my research and analytical skills, provided me with a broader perspective on international relations, and deepened my appreciation for the role of regional governments in global diplomacy. The hands-on experience and exposure to various aspects of diplomatic work were invaluable in shaping my career aspirations and academic interests.

My internship at the Quebec Government Office in New York was a transformative experience that offered me a unique perspective on international diplomacy and regional engagement. By working on diverse projects and interacting with key figures in the field, I gained a deeper understanding of Quebec鈥檚 international strategy and its role in addressing global challenges.

The opportunity to visit the UN Headquarters and engage with the Haitian Ambassador highlighted the significance of regional diplomacy in the broader context of global affairs. The practical support I received allowed me to focus on my professional development and contribute meaningfully to the office鈥檚 mission. Overall, the internship not only enriched my academic knowledge but also provided me with a clearer vision of my future career in international relations.
