Research highlight: Unique challenges of Canada鈥檚 North require unique fiscal arrangements | Fellow Christopher Yurris
2022-23 CAnD3 Fellow Christopher Yurris recently co-authored听听in Policy Options on fiscal federalism in Canada鈥檚 three territories. Writing alongside Daniel B茅land, CAnD3 team member, and Trevor Tombe, Chris argues that the unique circumstances of the territories鈥攍ike the devolution of lands and natural resources and healthcare spending in the context of aging populations鈥攏eed to be considered when looking at fiscal arrangements between Ottawa and territorial governments.
What could these distinct fiscal arrangements for the territories look like? The authors contend that natural resource development and demographics are central issues to be considered, and insights from policy developments in the territories could inform reforms in other parts of the country.听

Christopher Yurris is an MA student in political science at 91社区, under the supervision of Dr. Christa Scholtz. His interests include Canadian politics, specifically Northern Canadian politics, along with quantitative research methods. For his thesis, he is working on how incumbency advantage operates in the non-partisan system of government in the Northwest Territories. Christopher holds a BA in political science from St. Francis Xavier University.
