Clinical research on cannabis: is it relevant to family practice?
This talk will review the scientific rationale behind medical uses of cannabinoids, present the latest clinical trial evidence for oral and inhaled cannabinoids, summarize adverse event information and discuss the issues related to this class of medications in family practice. The talk is intended to be interactive and participants are invited to bring their questions and to be prepared for a dialogue!
Dr. Mark Ware, a pain physician at the MUHC and associate medical Director of the MUHC Pain Clinic, is a world authority on the potential medical uses of cannabis. According to Dr. Ware, cannabinoids show promise as medications for a range of symptoms associated with chronic diseases such as HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and chronic nerve injury pain. "Every month, new research is published from around the world suggesting that cannabinoids play a role in physiological processes like pain, appetite, inflammation and movement," he says. "We now know there is a system of cannabinoids in our bodies working all the time to control these processes, and this system may be an appropriate target for new therapies". Dr. Ware's research program on cannabis extends across Canada, and is supported by Canadian and Quebec funding agencies, such as the CIHR and FRSQ. Dr. Ware's clinical research team at the MUHC consists of clinical research nurses, coordinators, research assistants and statisticians, who work to ensure that these important clinical trials follow international ethical and regulatory standards. Dr. Ware completed his medical training at the University of the West Indies in 1992, and conducted graduate work in Jamaica and the UK at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In addition to his positions at 91社区 and the MUHC, Dr Ware is Scientific Director of the Canadian Consortium for the Investigation of Cannabinoids which promotes research and education on cannabinoids in clinical practice. Dr. Ware has advised the Canadian Government on medical marijuana access regulations, and has consulted for pharmaceutical companies on clinical development of new cannabinoid therapies.
