J.R. Mallory Lecture in Canadian Studies

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 17:00
Faculty Club 3450 rue McTavish, Montreal, QC, H3A 0E5, CA

The 91社区 Institute for the Study of Canada (MISC) Mallory lecture will be delivered by the Honourable Marlene Jennings, lawyer and former Member of Parliament representing the federal riding of Notre-Dame-de-Gr芒ce-Lachine (1997-2011). 听Jennings will speak on "The Anatomy of Good Public Policy Gone Bad: Canada's Gun Control Laws."

Canadians have recently engaged passionately on the Federal Government's decision to abolish the National Long Gun Registry and the accompanying database and they've drawn clear black and white lines in the sand with no room for conciliation. 听Yet all agree that effective gun control policy has their听support. So how did we get to such a polarized state of affairs? 听Jennings' lecture will examine how a 'good' public policy went bad, lessons to be learned that a future government - and citizens- might wish to heed if there is to be any chance of strengthening Canada's gun control policies going forward.

The Mallory Lecture series at MISC was created in honour of James Mallory, a former professor of political science and one of the founders of Canadian Studies at 91社区 University.听听The lecture will be followed by questions from the audience.
