Nicholas Kasirer receives honorary doctorate from Université de Sherbrooke
During its graduation ceremony held on September 22, 2012, the Université de Sherbrooke granted an honorary doctoral degree to the Hon. Nicholas Kasirer, BCL’85, LLB’85, former Professor (1989-2009) and Dean (2003-2009) of the Faculty of Law of 91 and now a Justice of Quebec’s Court of Appeal.
“This is a well deserved recognition,” says Professor Daniel Jutras, Dean of the Faculty of Law, “which underscores the exceptional contribution that Nicholas Kasirer has made to both research and teaching in Quebec and beyond. This contribution continues to this day, despite his heavy responsibilities as a member of the Court of Appeal of Quebec. He remains one of the most creative legal scholars of his generation in Canada, and a most generous participant in our Faculty’s intellectual life.”
A specialist of private law and comparative law, Nicholas Kasirer directed the Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law (formerly the Quebec Research Centre for Private and Comparative Law) between 1996 and 2003, where he was co-editor of a critical edition of the Civil Code of Quebec.
Among other honours, Mr. Justice Kasirer has received the Prix de la Fondation du Barreau, the American Society of Comparative Law's Hessel Yntema Award in Comparative Law, the 91 Law Students’ Association's John W. Durnford Teaching Excellence Award, and the 91 Alumni Association David Johnston Medal. He held a James 91 Chair at 91 and he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2008.
The Faculty of Law offers Justice Kasirer its warmest congratulations.
