Two doctors from the Children's to serve as president of the Canadian Paediatric Society

Published: 20 April 2005

Dr. Denis Leduc will begin his term as president of the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) in June and Dr. Gary Pekeles will serve as president in 2007-2008.

Dr. Leduc is a community pediatrician, an attending physician at the Montreal Children's Hospital of the MUHC, and an associate pediatrician in the neonatal and developmental pediatrics department at the Royal Victoria Hospital of the MUHC. You may have seen the monthly child health column he writes for Montreal Families. Dr. Leduc has served on numerous committees of the CPS, including Chair of the Community Paediatrics Committee and CPS representative with the College of Family Physicians of Canada and in the Joint Action Committee for Children and Adolescent Health.

His personal mandate as president of the CPS is to continue to advance the society's mission and current advocacy in mental health, aboriginal health and the creation of a national injury prevention strategy. This will be linked with a commitment to enhance and support the pivotal role pediatricians play in the health care needs of children and youth.

Dr. Gary Pekeles has been elected vice-president of the Canadian Paediatric Society for 2005-2006 and will serve as president in 2007-2008. Dr. Pekeles is the medical director of the Children's Northern and Native Child Health Program and was until recently director of Inpatient Services. He is also a member of the MUHC Board of Directors. Dr. Pekeles also served as secretary of the Canadian Society of Circumpolar Health and as vice-president of the International Union for Circumpolar Health. He also taught pediatrics and community health in Tanzania and Ethiopia.

The Canadian Paediatric Society is a national advocacy association committed to the health needs of children and youth. As a voluntary professional association the CPS represents more than 2,200 pediatricians, pediatric sub specialists, pediatric residents and other child health care providers.
