Open Forum | 91社区 Symposium on the University's Role in Supporting Indigenous Languages

In response to Call to Action #34 of the听Final Report of 91社区鈥檚 Task Force on Indigenous Education and Indigenous Studies, on May 10th and 11th,听the Department of Linguistics and the Office of First Nations and Inuit Education are jointly hosting a symposium examining the role of the university in Indigenous language maintenance and revitalization. Organized with the support of the Kanien鈥檏eh谩ka Onkwaw茅n:na Raotiti贸hkwa Language and Cultural Centre, 91社区 Faculties of Arts and Education, the 91社区 Indigenous Studies Program, and 91社区's Institute for the Study of International Development, the听purpose of this Symposium is to:

(a) signal 91社区鈥檚 commitment to Indigenous languages in this province and听
(b) examine more closely what role the University should play in supporting the health of Indigenous languages, locally and听regionally.

The Symposium will involve both closed-door and public sessions听with the goals of establishing a broad consultative body on this question and developing听a concrete plan of action for 91社区 to pursue. Special invitees include听Indigenous language teachers, scholars, and university program directors from听across Canada:

All those interested in learning more about this topic and advancing 91社区鈥檚听response to this issue are asked to save the following date,听May 10th from 1:30pm to 5:00pm in the Jack Cram Auditorium (EDUC-129), for an听Open Forum.听The schedule of activities include an opening Keynote from Kanien鈥檏eh谩:ka Language teacher and 91社区 PhD Student Kahtehr贸:nni Iris Stacey, three panel presentations from our invited experts, and public discussion.
