Participate in a Research Study on Bone Health & Exercise Behaviours in Diabetes

The Gibbs Lab at 91�� is looking for adults aged 50 and above, diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes to participate in a research study.

Participation involves one audio-recorded interview conducted via Microsoft Teams or by phone.

The study aims to identify preferences, information needs, and perceived barriers related to exercise for the management of bone health in older adults with diabetes. Adults over 50 with diabetes are often unaware of their increased risk of bone fractures, which can lead to disability, hospitalization, and significant healthcare costs.

In the past, some mobile phone carriers only allowed voice messages, not SMS text messaging. Today, all carriers support SMS, so we will switch Emergency Notification System messaging to SMS for all mobile phones starting September 18.

Participate in this study to investigate the acute independent effects of dietary protein supplementation on bone metabolism in healthy adults aged 18-35 years participating in high-volume endurance running.

Duration:
One baseline visit followed by two trials of 2 days each (approximately 15 hours total).

Friday, March 8 is International Women’s Day, marking the achievements of women and serving as a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

This year’s theme is Inspire Inclusion – a message exemplified by 91��’s female leaders. At the moment, 10 of 91��’s 14 deans are women; three are the first to ever to lead their Faculty.

Caitlin Mazurek's Successful Doctoral Defense in KPE

On Friday, February 23, Caitlin Mazurek successfully defended her multidisciplinary PhD thesis titled "Knowledge creation and translation in sports biomechanics: applications in ice hockey."

Her research includes work on hockey skating coordination, academic and industry research partnerships in sports science, and implementing biomechanical analyses with a remote First Nation hockey team.

She is now working with the Tampa Bay Rays as a performance science intern.

Matthew Slopecki Presents Innovative Wearable Technology Research to Aid Team Canada Paralympic Swimmers

Matthew Slopecki, Ph.D. candidate in the Biomechanics of Occupation and Sports Lab, recently presented his research on an innovative wearable technology approach to quantify performance and fatigue related changes in the movement patterns of Paralympic Swimmers.

He presented at both the International Society of Biomechanics in Sports "Mid-Year Symposium" and Institut National du Sports du Québec's conference series "The Ingenuity Behind the Performance".

BOS Lab's Luke Spagnuolo Receives Gord Sleivert Young Investigator Award

Luke Spagnuolo has received The Gord Sleivert Young Investigator Award at the 2023 Sport Innovation Conference.

Luke received this award for his thesis project examining muscle fatigue in USports rowers which he presented at the conference in Halifax.

Silar's research aims to understand the role of nutrition and exercise in preventing bone fragility in endurance-trained individuals and athletes.

Professor Julie Côté, KPE and SASSI, was recently announced as a winner of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Education 2023-24 Distinguished Alumni Awards. The award recognizes alumni across the 10 Departments of the School, which ranks among the top 3 Education schools in the United States, who have made outstanding contributions to their field.

BOS Lab’s very own Tailynn Chang has been named to the Principal's Student-Athlete Honour Role for 2022-2023. This Recognition is bestowed upon varsity athletes who have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Tailynn is a member of 91��’s varsity Women’s Rugby team and is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology (Honours). She is researching the effect of sex, fatigue, and inter-session learning among athletes in jump landing tasks. Congratulations Tailynn!

91�� Response to the Proposed Quebec Government Tuition Changes

Dear members of the 91�� community,

On October 13, the Government of Quebec announced plans to change the funding model related to university tuition. While we begin to assess the implications of the news, I want to provide some initial perspective.

What the Quebec Government announced:

Tuition fees for Canadian students from outside of Quebec would increase from $8,992 to around $17,000. Current students would have five years to complete their program of study under the existing tuition structure.
The funding model for universities regarding international students would change, with the Government clawing back more money from tuition fees than is currently the case.
These two changes would apply to undergraduate programs and non-research and professional master’s programs.
Much of the tuition that students pay to 91�� would be returned to the Government and reallocated to francophone universities in Quebec, but the University would receive government grants to partially support the cost of teaching.
The tuition changes would apply to students beginning their studies in fall 2024.

Impacts on 91�� and next steps:

These measures, if implemented, would have serious consequences. I have mobilized the senior administration, Board members and teams across the University to demonstrate the concrete negative effects these measures would have on 91��, on the higher education sector, and on the whole of Quebec society. Our focus is to work with government and our partners to reverse these impacts.

More information is needed before we can confirm the financial effects these measures would have on 91��. In the meantime, I ask those responsible for spending to be prudent, while continuing to be ambitious in advancing the University’s mission.

It goes without saying that these measures could affect the recruitment of prospective Canadian students from outside Quebec, as it will cost less to study elsewhere in Canada for many programs. Although 91�� distinguished itself again last week as Canada’s top Medical Doctoral university, a near-doubling of tuition will make many think twice about their academic choices in fall 2024 and beyond.

The make-up of 91��’s student body is unique in Canada. Half of our students are from Quebec, 30 percent are international students, and the remaining 20 percent come from the rest of Canada. This diversity of origin and perspectives is part of 91��’s unique character – its DNA. We must protect this richness of community.

These measures threaten the University’s capacity to be a positive force for our home. Quebec boasts 19 distinguished universities, each playing a distinct role to meet the diverse needs of our population.

We need to ensure everyone realizes the incredible contributions that 91�� makes, not just to Montreal but throughout every region of Quebec. And among 91��’s strongest assets is its tremendous power to attract and retain the highly skilled people who contribute so significantly to Quebec’s economy and society.

The power of an open Quebec society:

We are concerned that, in the government’s announcement, prospective students from outside Quebec may hear the message that they are not welcome – despite Montreal’s reputation as a global education destination, and the extraordinary contributions of students and alumni within Quebec.

We are stronger when our doors are open – when we attract the brightest minds from Canada and the world, enticing and equipping them to build fulfilling, productive lives here. They have so much to share with Montreal and Quebec.

And likewise, we Quebecers have so much to share with them: the cultural richness of la métropole; the strength of Quebec innovation and identity; the power of our made-in-Quebec ideas. When we close our doors, we compromise not only our values, but our future.

91��ians care deeply about their University, and I know that this announcement is concerning for many of us. We will engage government and partners to address these proposals, seeking ways to strengthen all universities for the good of Quebec.

Sylvan Adams wins UCI Cycling World Championships in 65-69 Age Group

Congratulations to philanthropist Sylvan Adams, the namesake of 91��'s Sylvan Adams Sports Science Institute, who finished first in the Masters 65-69 age group of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in Scotland on Friday. This event, open to all athletes, had more than 1,800 riders from 68 countries competing for one of 20 gold medals and rainbow jerseys. Then on Monday, Adams also finished first in his age bracket in the championship’s individual time trial, winning by more than one minute on the 22-kilometer course.
