Project manager:ÌýMark Ouimet –Ìýmark.ouimet [at] mcgill.ca

Assistant project manager: Claudia CarpanzanoÌý-ÌýClaudia.carpanzano [at] mcgill.caÌý

Construction start date:ÌýSeptember 25, 2023

Planned construction end date:ÌýFebruary 15, 2024

Work schedule:ÌýMondays to Fridays, 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Scope of work:

The project consists of converting existing mailroom MS3-048 into a biosafety level 1 lab and converting the existing storage room MS3-047 into a kitchenette and mailroom. Existing flooring, ceiling tiles and light fixtures will be replaced. New lab benches, sink, wall shelves and electromechanical services will be installed. Existing wall finishes will be repaired and painted.

Electromechanical services will pass through the existing shaft adjacent to these rooms. During construction, access to the mechanical shaft will be required at each floor level.

Demolition work under medium-risk asbestos conditions is planned until mid-October 2023. As part of the renovation, floor tiles will be removed from the space. Since the floor tiles contain asbestos, this work will be carried out under asbestos safety protocols. This phase of the work is expected to be completed by mid-October. The safety protocols include a variety of measures aimed at protecting both the workers and the occupants of the building. They include sealing off the construction site from the rest of the building, the use of specialized vacuuming equipment and personal protective equipment by the workers, cleaning, and daily inspections by an industrial hygiene professional.

Work will be required in certain adjacent rooms which may be occupied. The users of these rooms will be contacted for more detailed coordination ahead of time.

Impact:

Service shutdowns will be required. Users will be informed in advance.Ìý

During construction, access to the ceiling and to the mechanical shaft will be required in certain rooms outside the construction zone, for the installation or modification of electromechanical services. Such construction work will be coordinated in advance with the building director and the users.

Work may be required in the following spaces:

  • MSB-056 (Research Lab)
  • MS1-115 (Research Lab)
  • MS-092 (Office)
  • MS2-092A (Janitor Closet)
