Global Health Seminar Series: Paper based Molecular Diagnostics for use in Low and Middle Income Countries

Friday, January 22, 2016 13:00to14:00
Macdonald Engineering Building Room 267, 817 rue Sherbrooke Ouest, Montreal, QC, H3A 0C3, CA

The 91社区 Global Health Programs, the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and the Department of Bioengineering are proud to present a seminar discussion with Dr. Catherine Klapperich of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Boston University.

About the Seminar:

The Klapperich Lab focuses on enabling advanced diagnostics in the broad area of mother and child health. Our work focuses on the design and development of low cost devices to sensitively and specifically diagnose and monitor infectious diseases,聽 detect biomarkers to assess cancer risk, and monitor adherence to drug regimens like highly active antiretroviral therapy. Our devices include on board sample preparation modules using both plastic and paper components. We have demonstrated聽 molecular detection schemes using paper based, isothermal techniques that do not require electrical components or pumps. The talk will focus on our work over the last decade to integrate these components into sample/answer out devices. Applications and clinical needs assessments for translation of these technologies in low resource settings and modern healthcare systems will be discussed.

Refreshments will be served.

91社区 is located on land which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous Peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg Nations. 91社区 honours, recognizes, and respects these nations as the traditional stewards of the lands and waters on which peoples of the world now gather. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous Peoples from across Turtle Island. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.
