The Department of Art History & Communication Studies and the Indigenous Studies and Community Engagement Initiative present "Go Wan Go Mohawk鈥檚 Queering of West," a talk by Prof. Michelle McGeough (Concordia University) on Thursday, November 23, 5:30-6:30 pm, in Arts W-215.

The talk focuses on Go-won-go Mohawk's life as the first Native American playwright, her larger-than-life persona(s) and "troubling gender" performances. In plying her craft, Go-won-go Mohawk brought into the realm of public discourse a construction of Native American masculinity that differed from popular stereotypes. In her stage performances as the Native American male protagonist in the plays Wep-Ton-No Mah, The Indian Mail Carrier, and The Flaming Arrow, she did not portray Native Americans as victims but as the heroes.
