 s Bibliothèques de 91ÉçÇř est heureuse de vous inviter le jeudi 11 avril 2
 024\, à 17 h 30\, dans le cadre du Programme d’artiste-en-résidence Michel
 e Larose – Bibliothèque Osler à un vernissage par l’artiste Stéphan Ballar
 d intitulé Heart and Mind à la Bibliothèque Osler de l’histoire de la méde
 cine (3655\, promenade William Osler).\n\nRSVP\n\nAbout the exhibit\n\nThi
 s project is a heartfelt photographic tribute to the world of surgical pra
 ctice and the remarkable theater it comprises — the operating room. It all
 ows us to closely observe the dedicated actors within\, each meticulously 
 playing their roles\, from the caregivers tending to the patient's well-be
 ing\, the biomedical engineers studying for new tools to the surgeons orch
 estrating every step of the operation. This work is a product of collabora
 tion with highly skilled surgeons who granted me the privilege of witnessi
 ng their daily miracles and the positive impact they have on countless liv
 es.\n	\n	Delving into the relation of art and surgery\, an ongoing book proj
 ect sparked from this photographic dialogue attains new heights through th
 e Michele Larose - Osler Medical Library Award. This recognition opened a 
 gateway to deeper immersion within the repository of knowledge housed with
 in the library's walls\, prompting reflection on the significance of my ro
 le within the context of history.\n	\n	Guided by the erudition of Osler Medi
 cal Library scholars\, the project evolves from its inception\, intertwini
 ng images from ancient medical tomes with contemporary operating room phot
 ographs\, giving rise to a transcendent theme. Amidst the solemn columns\,
  rows\, and shelves of the rare original medical book collection\, the pas
 sage of time unfurls a narrative of decay and adaptation\, spanning millen
 nia. The quest for permanence amidst this flux becomes paramount\, mirrori
 ng our evolution from vellum to bio-ink\, encapsulating the very essence o
 f our humanity. As we witness the beginning of regenerative medicine\, the
  written word metamorphoses into life itself\, rendering the book not mere
 ly a vessel of knowledge but the very matrix of our perpetuity.\n	\n	Through
  this heightened awareness\, the photographic corpus captures the present 
 time\, where the surgeons' poetic handwriting on life remains vital.\n\nAb
 out the artist\n\nStéphan Ballard's life and work has revolved around Mont
 real. Having pursued studies in graphic design and photography at Concordi
 a University\, he swiftly emerged onto the artistic scene with participati
 ons in numerous collective and solo exhibitions spanning across Canada and
  Europe.\n\nHis creative path took a significant turn in 1996 when he was 
 honored with the Barbara Spohr Grant\, which led him to a period of develo
 pment at the Banff Art Centre. Here\, he integrated emerging new media int
 o his artistic process\, benefiting from a multidisciplinary foundation in
  design\, art\, and photography.\n\nStéphan Ballard's artistic beginnings 
 intersected with technological advancements\, as he navigated the transiti
 on from traditional chemical photography to the digital realm. This transf
 ormative phase nurtured a deep sensitivity to the ever-evolving landscape 
 of technology and reinforced the importance of cultivating adaptable creat
 ivity in response to shifting mediums.\n\nStéphan Ballard's artistic path 
 also led him into unexpected territories. Amid the backdrop of the COVID-1
 9 pandemic\, he found himself recruited by the medical photography team. H
 ere\, he stumbled upon the realm of medical photography and\, with great e
 nthusiasm\, surgical photography. His prior engagement with the National F
 ilm Board of Canada\, a bastion of documentary cinema\, prepared him for t
 his privilege\, and he ardently embarked on a quest to master the art of s
 urgical photography. This journey amalgamated innovative capture technique
 s with composite imaging processes borrowed from cinema\, amplifying the p
 otential of photographic documentation for surgical education.\n\nEncourag
 ed by the surgical department\, his initiative and experimentation in capt
 uring these images garnered widespread appreciation\, and to his gratifyin
 g surprise\, his artistic images found an esteemed place within the lexico
 n of medical imaging for educational purposes.\n\nThis achievement led him
  to being awarded the Michèle-Larose Osler Grant. His ongoing project invo
 lves collaborating with surgeons to juxtapose the content of venerable med
 ical illustrations with operating room interventions\, offering a unique p
 erspective on the history of medical imaging.\n\nAbout the Michele Larose 
 – Osler Library Artist-in-Residence Programme\n\nThanks to the generosity 
 of Dr. Michele Larose\, artist and paediatric neuropsychiatrist who traine
 d in psychiatry and child psychiatry at 91ÉçÇř and in visual arts at Curti
 n University in Australia\, the Osler Library of the History of Medicine h
 as established an artist-in-residence programme.\n\nThe award supports vis
 ual artists visiting the university to create works that address contempor
 ary and/or historical subjects in medicine and the health sciences that ar
 e inspired by the rich and diverse collections held by the Osler Library a
 nd/or other sources at 91ÉçÇř\, which may include 91ÉçÇř faculties and hos
 pitals. Possible projects can include\, but are not limited to: painting\;
  photography\; performance\; sculpture\; and digital\, video or installati
 on art.\n\n\nAu sujet de l’exposition\n\nCe projet représente un hommage p
 hotographique sincère à l’univers de la pratique chirurgicale et à son rem
 arquable théâtre : la salle d’opération.\n\nVous y verrez de près chaque i
 ntervenant dévoué qui s’y active\, s’efforçant méthodiquement d’accomplir 
 son rôle\, des soignants veillant au bien-être du patient aux ingénieurs b
 iomédicaux qui étudient et conçoivent de nouveaux instruments\, sans oubli
 er bien sûr les chirurgiens\, véritables chefs d’orchestre coordonnant cha
 que mouvement de l’intervention. Cette œuvre est le fruit d’une collaborat
 ion avec des chirurgiens au talent immense qui m’ont accordé le privilège 
 d’assister aux miracles qu’ils accomplissent chaque jour et de témoigner d
 e l’impact positif qu’ils ont sur d’innombrables vies.\n\nPlongeant au cœu
 r de la relation entre l’art et la chirurgie\, un projet de livre en cours
  de création né de ce dialogue photographique atteint de nouveaux sommets 
 grâce au prix d’artiste-en-résidence Michele Larose – Bibliothèque Osler. 
 Cette reconnaissance a ouvert la porte Ă  une immersion plus profonde dans 
 cette mine de savoir\, me poussant à réfléchir à l’importance de mon rôle 
 dans un contexte historique.\n\nGuidé par la sagesse des érudits de la Bib
 liothèque de médecine Osler\, le projet a évolué par l’entrelacement d’ima
 ges d’anciens ouvrages médicaux et de photographies modernes de salles d’o
 pération vers un thème transcendant. Au milieu des colonnes\, rangées et é
 tagères donnant un air solennel à la collection de livres médicaux rares e
 t originaux de la bibliothèque\, le passage du temps fait le récit de la d
 égénérescence et de l’adaptation au fil des millénaires. De ce flot tempor
 el émerge notre quête existentielle de la permanence\, à l’image de l’évol
 ution du vélin à la bioencre\, résumant l’essence même de notre humanité. 
 Alors que nous sommes témoins des débuts de la médecine régénérative\, l’é
 crit se métamorphose et prend vie pour dépasser son rôle de vaisseau de la
  connaissance et incarner la matrice de notre perpétuité.\n\nVu à travers 
 le prisme de cette prise de conscience le corpus photographique capture ce
  moment présent\, où la calligraphie poétique qu’apposent les chirurgiens 
 sur la vie demeure vitale.\n\nAu sujet de l’artiste\n\nStéphan Ballard a f
 ait de Montréal le centre de sa vie et de son travail. Après avoir réalisé
  des études en design graphique et photographie à l’Université Concordia\,
  il s’est rapidement illustré sur la scène artistique avec ses participati
 ons Ă  de nombreuses expositions collectives ou en solo au Canada et en Eur
 ope.\n\nSon cheminement créatif a pris un virage important en 1996 alors q
 u’il a reçu le prix Barbara Spohr offert par le Banff Art Centre. Durant c
 e séjour\, il a pu expérimenter en intégrant de nouveaux médias émergents 
 dans son processus artistique et en mettant Ă  profit ses bases multidiscip
 linaires en design\, en art et en photographie.\n\nL’évolution artistique 
 de Stéphan Ballard a suivi celle de la technologie\, en s’arrimant à la tr
 ansition de la photographie traditionnelle sur pellicule vers le monde num
 Ă©rique. Ce processus de transformation a nourri chez lui une profonde sens
 ibilité envers le paysage en constante évolution de la technologie\, tout 
 en renforçant l’idée de maintenir une certaine fluidité dans sa créativité
  afin de s’adapter aux médias changeants.\n\nLe parcours artistique de Sté
 phan Ballard l’a également mené vers des territoires inattendus. Au cœur d
 e la pandémie de COVID-19\, il a été recruté par une équipe de photographi
 e médicale qui l’a amené à découvrir\, avec un grand enthousiasme\, l’univ
 ers de la photographie chirurgicale. Une entente antérieure avec l’Office 
 national du film du Canada\, un bastion du cinéma documentaire\, lui a pav
 é la voie vers ce privilège\, et il s’est donné pour mission de maîtriser 
 cet art avec passion. Dans sa quête\, Stéphan Ballard a fusionné des techn
 iques de capture novatrices et des processus de composition d’images empru
 ntés au cinéma afin d’amplifier le potentiel de la documentation photograp
 hique dans l’étude de la chirurgie.\n\nAvec l’appui du département de chir
 urgie\, son initiative et ses expérimentations ont suscité un intérêt géné
 ralisé et il a été agréablement surpris de voir ses images artistiques se 
 tailler une place honorable au sein du lexique des images médicales à des 
 fins éducatives.\n\nCette réussite l’a mené vers l’obtention du prix Laros
 e-Osler\, et le projet sur lequel il travaille en ce moment sollicite la c
 ollaboration de chirurgiens pour juxtaposer le contenu d’illustrations méd
 icales vénérables et les interventions en salle d’opération afin de créer 
 une perspective unique sur l’histoire de l’imagerie médicale.\n\nAu sujet 
 du Programme d’artiste-en-résidence Michele Larose - Bibliothèque Osler\n
 \nGrâce à la générosité du Dre Michele Larose\, artiste et neuropsychiatre
  pédiatrique qui a suivi une formation en psychiatrie et pédopsychiatrie à
  91ÉçÇř et est aussi diplĂ´mĂ©e en arts visuels Ă  l’UniversitĂ© Curtin en Aus
 tralie\, la Bibliothèque Osler de l’histoire de la médecine a mis en place
  un programme d’artiste-en-résidence.\n\nLe prix soutient des artistes en 
 arts visuels qui comptent visiter l’université dans le but de créer des œu
 vres qui traitent de sujets contemporains et / ou historiques en médecine 
 et en sciences de la santé. De plus l’œuvre devra s’inspiré des collection
 s riches et diverses détenues par la bibliothèque Osler et / ou d’autres s
 ources Ă  91ÉçÇř\, comme Ă  la FacultĂ©s et hĂ´pitaux de 91ÉçÇř. Les projets p
 euvent inclure\, sans s’y limiter à : la peinture \; la photographie \; la
  performance \; la sculpture \; l’art numérique\, et la vidéo ou d’install
 ation.\n
