Here \, I consider the role of the hippocampus as a driver\, or cost function\, for deep learning throughout brain evolution and in modern AI. Modern AI takes millions of training samples and is told the corresponding interpret ations (outputs) for each. Animals learn fast and through mostly unstructu red exploration. I argue that the ability to predict\, and especially to r emember predictions over long timescales\, is a key component of animal le arning and an avenue towards more data-efficient and general AI. In part 2 \, I address the issue that current AI models don't make good long-term pr edictions and present a way forward through HippoMaps: a tool for quantita tive mapping of hippocampal macro-\, micro-circuitry\, and functional reco rdings across domains and spatial scales. Spatial comparison of these maps can help us better understand the contrast of the acquisition methods and inter-individual differences\, but also the mechanisms through which circ uitry gives rise to function. Altogether\, this talk leverages computation al methods for making bridgeheads between theory-driven and data-driven un derstanding of learning and intelligence.\n DTSTART:20241021T160000Z DTEND:20241021T170000Z LOCATION:de Grandpre Communications Centre\, Montreal Neurological Institut e\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 2B4\, 3801 rue University SUMMARY:The BIC Postdocs and Students’ Seminar Series: The Hippocampus at t he Center of the Universe: Evolution\, AI\, and HippoMaps URL:/neuro/channels/event/bic-postdocs-and-students-se minar-series-hippocampus-center-universe-evolution-ai-and-hippomaps-360551 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
