Transition to Clinical Pediatrics Course (TCP) Course Director: Dr. Preetha Krishnamoorthy Pain Lecturer: Catherine E. Ferland, PhD Audience: Med Students Year 2

This 2-week course provides the student with basic principles in pediatric care which are essential to safe and effective practice for all physicians. The course will also assist the students in developing an integrated bio-psychosocial approach, which translates effectively to all areas of practice and is particularly relevant in the delivery of health care to infants, children, adolescents and their parents.

Topics • Pain evaluation in the pediatric population

• Chronic non cancer pain in neonates, children and adolescents Objectives

• Appreciate the differences in the evaluation of pain between adults and children

• Recognize the key elements and consequences of pain in neonates and small children

• Understand the complex multifactorial nature of chronic pain in children and adolescents These objectives will be met through:

• Lectures o Physiology of pain in neonates and infants (30 minutes) o Quantification of pain and function in neonates, children and adolescents (30 minutes) By the end of the sessions the students will be able to:

1. Understand why the increased pain sensitivity of premature infants and the newborn has lifelong consequences.

2. Apply age-related basic pain assessment tools.

3. Be aware of the problems related to pharmaceutical drug registration in pediatrics (offlabel use).

4. Be aware that non-pharmacological pain management strategies are effective for the treatment of both acute and chronic pain in children.

5. Understand that pediatric pain is a multidimensional experience requiring comprehensive and ongoing assessment and effective management.
