Policy Concerning Alcohol, Cannabis and Other Drugs

Dear members of the 91社区 community,

Effective November 1, 2019, 91社区 has adopted a new Policy Concerning Alcohol, Cannabis and Other Drugs, following approval by the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors on October 31. This policy is the product of broad consultation with stakeholders from across the University community, and was developed as part of 91社区鈥檚 commitment to providing a healthy, safe, and respectful working and learning environment.

The new policy applies to all 91社区 students, faculty, staff and visitors on the downtown and Macdonald campuses, the Gault Nature Reserve, and spaces leased by the University. The new policy replaces the Interim Rules Concerning the Possession and Use of Cannabis at 91社区 that were introduced in August 2018.

Under the policy, it is not generally permissible to consume alcohol or cannabis on University property, and never while operating a vehicle or equipment owned or leased by the University.

The consumption of alcohol on University property will continue to be permissible in establishments or at events only where an alcohol permit has been acquired. Students living in University residence buildings (and their guests), may consume alcohol in accordance with applicable residence regulations.

The policy will permit the consumption of cannabis for medical reasons, accompanied by a valid medical certificate, under certain conditions. However, all smoking or inhaling of cannabis is prohibited on University property.

Research subjects may consume alcohol or cannabis on University property as required for participation in approved research studies.

The policy will also permit the possession of unopened containers of alcohol, or legally permissible amounts of cannabis with certain exceptions, for later personal consumption outside University property. Alcohol and cannabis must be stored in a safe manner, not accessible to minors.

As has always been the case, the possession, consumption or distribution of illegal drugs on University property, or in a University vehicle, is prohibited.

The full Policy Concerning Alcohol, Cannabis and Other Drugs is available online.

Sincerely,

Yves Beauchamp, Vice-Principal (Administration and Finance)

Christopher Manfredi, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic)
