The winners of the 2025 Fessenden Professorship Awards and Tomlinson Science Awards have been announced.

The Fessenden Professorship in Science and Innovation Award, named after Canadian electrical engineer Reginald Aubrey Fessenden, was established in 2007 to accelerate the validation and technology transfer of promising concepts in the early- or mid-stages of development and bring them closer to a commercial product and market.

Canada in general, and Montreal specifically, have been facing a drug toxicity and fatal overdose crisis for nearly a decade. While integrated systems of interventions are necessary to address drug-related harms, the use of naloxone has been a key strategy to reduce the acute effect of opioid-involved deaths. Currently, 91�� does not offer naloxone trainings to the campus community, limiting students’ ability to assist in the event of an overdose.

Geography Department celebrates 80th anniversary

91��’s Department of Geography turns 80 this year!

This milestone marks the anniversary of George Kimble’s appointment as 91��’s first Professor of Geography and Department Chair on January 1, 1945.

Kimble, who had previously been a meteorologist with the Royal Navy, was allocated two rooms in the Arts Building (rooms 30 and 38) by the Faculty of Arts and Science to lay the foundation for the new department. A few months later, F.K. Hare was appointed as 91��’s second Professor of Geography (eventually becoming Dean of Arts and Science in 1961).

Dr. Tina Montreuil, clinical (school) psychologist and associate professor in the department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, was called upon for her expertise in child and adolescent mental health to comment on the recent rapport issued by l’Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ). The report highlights the marked rise in mental disorders among high school students.

Dr. Montreuil provides expert opinion on what could explain these increases among children and teens, but also provides insights on prevention opportunities that can arise from these findings.

As a Loran Scholar, the Vancouverite moved across the country in 2021 to pursue his B.Sc. Honours in Neuroscience at 91��. He was drawn by The Neuro (The Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital), Canada’s largest neuroscience research centre.

In the summer of 2022, Wong traveled to Yellowknife to conduct a research project on the unique health-care challenges in the North, an experience that would shift his career trajectory.

This summer, Gault Nature Reserve hosted four high schoolers from the West Island Black Community Association for this year’s Youth Biodiversity Internships Program. This friendly coding competition brought together 163 people, from grade 10 high school students to graduate students. Saskatchewan’s first Centrosaurus and Citipes elegans fossils discovered by 91�� researchers

Paleontologists and students from 91�� have documented Saskatchewan's first confirmed fossil specimens of Centrosaurus, a horned dinosaur species closely related to Triceratops.

The search, conducted in Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park along the South Saskatchewan River, also unearthed a rare mix of dinosaur and marine fossils, shedding light on a dinosaur fauna which existed on the edge of an ancient sea at a time of rising sea levels long before humans roamed the earth.

Participation involves one audio-recorded interview conducted via Microsoft Teams or by phone.
