“U.S. and Canadian Higher Education Protests and University and Police Responses, 2012 to 2018”.
Co-sponsored by the Centre for the Study of Democratic Citizenship 91.
Abstract: Protest activism in universities and colleges is an essential engine of social change. The 2010s was a time of renewed higher education activism in Canada and the United States. Mass protests swept campuses both countries, from the massive 2012 strike campaign opposing tuition increases in Québec to campus mobilizing against the immigration policies of the first Trump administration. Prof. Ellen Berrey, Dr. Alex Hanna (joining online), and Kristen Bass will present their findings on major trends in campus protest and protest management by university administrations and police in this period. Their talk is based on their new dataset, the Higher Ed Protest Event Dataset, which contains more than 5,550 protests across almost 600 Canadian and U.S. universities and colleges.
