GENERAL DESCRIPTION

CLSC Métro has been a teaching site for both students and residents for over 25 years. Since 2012, the facility hasÌýexpanded to be able to accommodate full-time family medicine residents. The residents have their practice base at the CLSC, with academic core teaching at CLSC Côte-des-Neiges. Hospital rotations are at the Jewish General Hospital, with the flexibility to do some core rotations at the 91ÉçÇø Health Center Hospitals.

POPULATION

CLSC Métro services the territory of the west end of downtown Montreal and the City of Westmount. Its walk-in services are open to all.Ìý

The CLSC Métro's clientele is constituted in a huge part with daily workers and tourists. Another aspect of this population is itinerancy. There is a concentration of the homeless population in the centre of the town and dealing with this group is apart of the day to day reality of the Métro's team. The CSSS is currently working on a brand new program that will aim to deal with that clientele. The patient mix involves all ages and all socio-economic classes. The population is multi-ethnic.

Residents will be primarily responsible for a patient load of about 200 patients whom they will follow for the two years of their residency.

CLSC Métro has an active home care department, a strong mental health team, a good group of dedicated allied health professionals, and a fully-functional testing centre on the premises. It is also home to the Montreal Sexual Assault Centre (CVASM), and the residents receive specific teaching in this area.

Undergraduate Teaching

With the consent of the 91ÉçÇø Department of Family Medicine, a student may choose to do the four weeks of their urban clerkship experience at CLSC Métro. The student should have an interest in learning about practising family medicine in the context of the Québec public health network. The student would normally engage in clinical activities at the CLSC for most of the time, with formal teaching sessions held about once a week off-site in conjunction with the other clerkship students at other sites. Teaching is by case discussion, with the possibility to book follow-up of patients as time permits. The walk-in service should provide the student with a wide range of presenting complaints which are common to ambulatory medicine.

CLSC Metro receive one or two clerkship students every month for a full urban experience of family medicine in an urban setting.Ìý The residents are also involved in undergraduate teaching.

Student's activities:

The student will be offered the opportunity to experience a family practice in a CLSC setting. She/he will learn how the CLSC’s fit into the health care system, and how the services offered might complement the student’s future practice.

Although it is not possible to predict which presenting complaints the student will be faced with during their rotation, one can expect to have a thorough review of STI screening, treatment and prevention. Common infectious diseases will also be reviewed, as well as routine office gynecology and pediatrics. The student may also request to spend some time with the home care department.

PARTICULARITY OF THIS TEACHING SITE

Most of the standard analysis can be done in this laboratory and some tests can even be done immediately as the doctor requests them.ÌýIt is also home to the Montreal Sexual Assault Centre (CVASM), and the residents receive specific teaching in this area.
