Medicine and Pediatric Subspecialty programs offered by the PGME office are accredited byÌýtheÌýRoyal College of Physicians and Surgeons of CanadaÌý(). RCPSC certification in a subspecialty can only be granted if one first completes all credentials, training, and examination requirements in a primary specialty that is the entry route to the subspecialty, i.e Internal Medicine. Information regardingÌýthe subspecialtyÌýtraining requirements forÌýeach program can be found on the Royal College website.
To be eligible in Quebec, candidates must hold an MD degree at a Faculty of Medicine in Canada or the United States or hold a degree from outside Canada or the United States (DHCEU) and have had obtained equivalence for their Medical Degree from the . They must be registered in an Internal Medicine residency in a Canadian or American Faculty of Medicine.
IMGs already licensed and practicing as subspecialists in Canada but who do not have access to Royal College certification via a primary specialty; and/or, IMGs who are registered with a postgraduate office in an accredited Royal College subspecialty training program, and who are not eligible to meet the prerequisite for subspecialty certification (Royal College certification in a primary specialty), can contact the for information about eligibility to sit the Exams. In order to be eligible through , candidates need to have their training assessed by the Royal College. Residents who are eligible through are not certified in the subspecialty, but they receive an attestation in the subspecialty. For information about practicing in Québec, please contact the .

As an outcome to the implementation of Competence by Design (CBD) in general Pediatrics’ Training programs, residents must now master all pediatrics pediatric competencies of the Pediatrics specialty, in most cases prior to proceeding to any subspecialty training. For most, this translates into pediatric residents doing four years of training prior to starting their subspecialty training.
The Pediatric Specialties Match will be moving to the Spring for the 2026-2027 application cycle. The application period will run from December to March.

With the change to Competence by Design (CBD) for residency training in Pediatrics in Canada, residents who are currently enrolled in an ACGME accredited Pediatrics programs in the U.S must now master all pediatric generalist competencies of the Pediatrics specialty prior to proceeding to applying for subspecialty training in Canada.
All residents currently enrolled in ACGME accredited Pediatrics programs in the U.S must have their training assessed by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada prior to being eligible to apply for Pediatrics subspecialty training in Canada.

An optional third year may be available for Family Medicine residents who are currently doing residency training in Québec. The Québec vice-deans have agreed upon a common calendar for admissions to the following programs within Québec. Trainees applying to the Clinical Scholar and to the Mother and Child programs must submit their applications directly to the Faculty of Medicine to which they wish to apply.
