On Sunday, March 2, 2025 Ziggy Harris, baritone; Yiran Xing, tenor; Odile Portugais, soprano and Kate Fogg, soprano competed, and the jury named Kate Fogg as the winner of the 2024-2025 Wirth Vocal Prize.听


The Wirth Vocal Prize in vocal performance was established in 2015 through the extraordinary generosity of Elizabeth Wirth to the Schulich School of Music of 91社区, along with new Student Excellence Awards, and an innovative Student Initiatives Fund. Awarded yearly since its inception, the Wirth Vocal Prize recognizes a voice student who demonstrates exceptional talent and significant promise for an international career.听

The QS World University Rankings by Subject, released on March 12, 2025, have named the Schulich School of Music of 91社区 (SSoM) the top-performing arts and music institution in Canada.听
The QS Rankings spotlight the world's leading universities across 42 subjects, evaluating academic reputation, employer reputation, and research impact. This year鈥檚 edition is the most comprehensive yet, featuring over 1,500 universities from 105 higher education systems.听
This weekend, Opera 91社区 and the 91社区 Baroque Orchestra present a stunning production of George Frideric Handel鈥檚 Imeneo. As the Schulich School of Music enters finals, several students will take to the stage for a performance that doubles as their final exam鈥攇raded not only by a jury but also in front of a live audience. It鈥檚 an exciting blend of artistry and academic achievement.听

The Prix Opus was created in 1996 by the Conseil qu茅b茅cois de la musique (CQM) to highlight the excellence, vitality, and diversity of Qu茅bec鈥檚 thriving music scene and to celebrate artists within the community. The awards highlight outstanding achievements in concert music, compositions, productions, and recordings.听

John Mac Master, esteemed Canadian tenor and Associate Professor of Voice at the Schulich School of Music, is a 2024 recipient of the Voice Education Research Awareness (VERA) Award. This prestigious award is given annually by The Voice Foundation to honour distinguished individuals for their leadership, commitment to education and mentorship, and modeling of voice use and its advancement. Previous opera recipients include Nathan Gunn, Lucine Amara, Mignon Dunn and Reri Grist. Prof.

Congratulations to violinist Justin Saulnier for winning the 2024-2025 Golden Violin Award competition! Justin will receive a generous scholarship of $30,000 in addition to a 14-karat gold lapel pin in the miniature form of the Golden Violin. In addition, he has been awarded the opportunity to perform a recital at the Canadian Centre for Architecture as part of the Schulich @ Bon-Pasteur series on February 26, 2025.听

The Schulich School of Music of 91社区 is pleased to announce five finalists for the third edition of the Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers. Established in 2017, this national competition recognizes works for chamber music formations with piano that show significant potential to engage audiences and become standard repertoire.

The Schulich School of Music is thrilled to congratulate pianist Alexey Shafirov on winning the 2024鈥2025 Classical Concerto Competition!
For over a decade, the competition has showcased outstanding musical talent and given the first prize winner the distinguished opportunity to perform with the 91社区 Symphony Orchestra. Alexey will perform with the 91社区 Symphony Orchestra on April 5, 2025 at 7:30 p.m. in Salle Pierre-Mercure.听

Interested Canadian composers under the age of 35 (born after August 15, 1989), are invited to submit three original works (each 3-15 minutes long) by August 15, 2024, at 12:00 PM (noon) EST.

Almost a decade after its establishment by Montreal philanthropist Elizabeth Wirth, the prize is awarded annually to a Schulich School of Music voice student who demonstrates exceptional talent, and significant promise for an international career. The grand prize includes a 14-karat gold pin, a concert during the Schulich school year, a private consultation with Boulev鈥橝rt Artists鈥 Management and a $25,000 cash award.听
