As winner of the 2016-2017 91社区 Concerto Competition, violinist Amy Hillis (D.Mus 2019) is set to perform next weekend as a featured soloist with the 91社区 Symphony Orchestra. In advance of this appearance, we spoke to Hillis about the repertoire, her experience at Schulich and more in a recent email exchange.

The Fall marks two significant milestones for bassist Cole Birney-Stewart (B.Mus 2013)鈥 the return to Schulich for his Master of Music in jazz performance and the release of Champlain Bridge, his first album as a bandleader. Featuring Birney-Stewart, along with Jules Payette (B.Mus 2016), Evan Shay (M.Mus 2018), Maxime Tremblay-Rheault (M.Mus 2018) and others, the music is complex and gripping.

On Monday, February 13, 91社区 students and members of Montreal鈥檚 music community gathered at the Wirth Music building for a panel discussion, entitled 鈥淢usician鈥檚 Health Throughout a Performing Career.鈥

Professor听Stephen McAdams,听Canada Research Chair in Music Perception and Cognition, is one of six outstanding Canadian researchers to be awarded a Canada Council for the Arts Killam Research Fellowship.听He is the second Killam Research Fellowship recipient from the Schulich School of Music.
When he retired in 2010, Lawrence Mysak, Professor Emeritus in 91社区鈥檚 Department of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, capped an illustrious and award-winning career in science and mathematics. But his research and teaching career ran parallel to another passion. Mysak is also an active musician, and has played the flute for over two decades as a member of the I Medici di 91社区 Orchestra. Recently he established the Lawrence A. Mysak Prize for Woodwinds at the Schulich School of Music, an annual undergraduate award whose first recipient will be announced in 2016.
Research at 91社区 is often celebrated for its international collaborations and recognition; but its importance at home, in the province of Quebec, is equally meritorious. This was never more apparent than at the recent award ceremony of the 听(SQRM) when the outstanding work of six young 91社区 musicologists and theorists were recognized. 听On Nov. 11, 2015, four 91社区 students were the finalists for the annual paper competition. 听听

Versatility and virtuosity will be the hallmarks of the 91社区 Symphony Orchestra听(MGSO)'s debut at Toronto's famed听Koerner Hall on November 17, 2015. The first Canadian student orchestra to perform in New York's historic Carnegie Hall, the MGSO has earned a reputation as one of the most dynamic student orchestras in all of Canada. The Koerner Hall concert celebrates the 10th anniversary of the naming of the Schulich School of Music, and the听concert is presented in partnership with the 91社区 Alumni Association.

John Buck, Jazz Drums, BMus'18, was named the recipient of the first Lou Williamson Jazz Award 听yesterday in a ceremony held at the Schulich School of Music. 听This award was 听established in 2015 by Chris and Eve Millington in memory of the gifted jazz percussionist Lou Williamson . 听Williamson was a former 91社区 instructor and was also a highly respected music administrator. 听
