Clinician Investigator Competencies
The RCPSCÌýClinician Investigator Program (CIP ) CompetenciesÌýÌý
Individual objectives of training will be developed for each resident relevant to each of the following overall competencies. At the completion of CIP training, the resident will be expected to have acquired the knowledge, skills, and attitudes fundamental to embarking on a career in health research. In most cases, further research training, specific to the candidate’s field of interest, will be required to succeed as an independent investigator.
Progress Monitoring
CIP Progress Tracking Form
Individual educational and research objectives are developed for each resident in conjunction with their supervisor. All CIP residents will undergo tracking of their research progress by theÌýCIP Competency CommitteeÌýevery 3 months. This is to ensure proper research training and supervision are in place from the start, so that any problems requiring remediation are detected in a timely manner.
- CIP-specific progress tracking at months 3, 6, 12 and 18 are evaluated by the CIP Competency Committee and discussed at residency competency meetings.
- Tracking specific to the graduate school is completed at months 12 and 24 by their respective graduate programs and submitted to the competency committee.
- Tracking of the residents in the post-graduate stream will be evaluated by the CIP Competency Committee using CIP progress forms at 12 and 18 months.
- CIP trainees are required to attend lectures within the CIP curriculum.
- These lectures cover specific objectives and competencies that may not be covered in their research project (e.g. grant writing), but are important for residents interested in pursuing careers as Clinician Scientists.
- These requirements are continuously updated to ensure they cover the CanMEDS roles required by the Royal College and theÌýcompetenciesneeded to graduate from the CIP.
- All CIP trainees are also required to complete anÌýÌýset up by the Quebec government.
- Residents will need to pay tuition fees according toÌýtheir registered CIP pathway.
Graduation Requirements
CIP Training Experiences
CIP Trainees will be eligible to graduate following the successful completion of:
- 24 months of research as defined by one of the three different pathways
- all evaluations by their research supervisors
- all progress tracking forms
- the on-lineÌý
- Mandatory Attendance at CIP curriculum lectures ( ≥ 80% attendance rate)
Graduate Stream:
- CIP trainees must fulfill all the above requirements towards obtaining their graduate (Master’s or PhD) degree.
Post-Graduate Stream:
- CIP trainees are required to publish at least one manuscript related to their research in a peer-reviewed journal or be accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
- Completion of all clinical components of their residency program and obtaining RCPSC certification in their specialty/subspecialty by examination
Travel Support
Once admitted to the CIP, residents are eligible to receive a $500 reimbursement for their travel-related expenses to present their research work in national or international conferences.
