From Rwanda to 91ÉçÇø: Serena Birasa (BCom’25) on leadership and learning

Serena Birasa (BCom’25) has embraced every challenge and opportunity that 91ÉçÇø Desautels has to offer. Originally from Rwanda and majoring in Finance, she chose 91ÉçÇø for its dynamic environment, where driven and passionate individuals push each other to grow. From forming lifelong friendships to securing internships that led to job offers, her journey has been transformative both academically and personally. As she looks ahead to a future in financial institutions, Serena shares valuable advice for African and African diaspora students: embrace change, seek out mentors, and never underestimate the power of perseverance.

Why did you choose to study at 91ÉçÇø Desautels?

I chose 91ÉçÇø Desautels not just for its stellar reputation and the beautiful campus in downtown Montreal but because I wanted to immerse myself in an environment filled with passionate, driven individuals. I was eager to be challenged and, in turn, to challenge others. Being surrounded by such inspiring people has made my journey here even more rewarding.

What is your major and what do you hope to do after graduation?

I am currently majoring in Finance and I’ll be graduating in June 2025. After graduation, I hope to deepen my expertise in financial institutions, including both banking and insurance sectors. My goal is to use my knowledge and my experiences to drive meaningful, positive changes within these industries, while also contributing to the broader communities they serve.

What have you enjoyed most about your experience thus far?

These past two and a half years at 91ÉçÇø have been transformative. I’ve had the pleasure of forming wonderful friendships in my classes and in student associations that have turned into a tight-knit community I cherish deeply. The professors here are also remarkable; they don't just teach but also inspire and turn into mentors, making a significant impact on my academic journey. I've also been fortunate enough to undertake enriching internships that led to job offers, opening so many doors, giving me a taste of the professional world and boosting my confidence. If I had to sum it up, the most rewarding part of my experience has been my growth- both intellectually and socially. 91ÉçÇø has consistently encouraged me to strive for my best, and I’ve learned to embrace the beauty of the learning process itself.

What advice would you give to other African and African diaspora students looking to study at Desautels?

Embrace your journey and seize every opportunity that comes your way. Step outside your comfort zone and join student clubs such as and not limited to 91ÉçÇø Investment Club, JED consulting, Desautels Sustainability Network, 91ÉçÇø African Students Society, and ASSA. Understand that the process of learning - from unfamiliarity to becoming an expert - requires time, willpower, discipline and consistency. Remember, not knowing something is simply an invitation to learn something new.

Connect with inspiring students and professors, even those with different interests; they can offer valuable insights. Seek challenges and strive for excellence, empowering yourself to make a positive impact in your communities and the world in general.
