PROJECT TITLE

English-language Training for Staff Members in the Bas-Saint-Laurent Health and Social Services Network.

AGENCY

Bas St-Laurent

PARTNERS

The CSSS de Rimouski-Neigette, The CSSS de La Mitis (beginning in 2011-2012)

OBJECTIVE

By providing professional English language courses to various staff members working in direct contact with users, the training program aims to enable the Bas-Saint-Laurent health and social services network to improve its ability to provide services in English in order to meet the needs of the English-speaking population.

NEEDS AND PRIORITIES

Particular needs have been identified 1) at the CSSS de Rimouski-Neigette which has both regional and supra-regional authority and is likely to serve English-speaking people from throughout the region as well as the C么te-Nord and Gasp茅sie; and 2) at the CSSS de La Mitis, which has an historic organized Anglophone community whose members are more likely to be unilingual. Priority, therefore, will be given to staff members from these institutions and, secondly, to people who have already taken English courses as part of the 91社区 Project as well as those with an intermediate level of English, in order to encourage students to reach a sufficient skill level in real-life situations. Participation in both course sessions during a single year is also encouraged so that staff members' ability to communicate in English can improve.

DESCRIPTION OF PLANNED ACTIVITIES

  • Training activities: Face-to-face teaching. Sixty-three groups, with an average of six people, are planned over a three-year period. Given the number of people benefiting from the training, participants are grouped based on their skill-level in English and not on their professional expertise.
  • Activities for maintaining and developing skills and for knowledge transfer: homework given at the end of each course (television, radio, newspaper) to all learners.
  • Learner evaluation: 听Participants are graded by a thirty minute telephone interview. In addition, instructors conduct an individual follow-up with each learner at mid-session and at the end of the session, depending on the syllabus objectives. Written expression and understanding will be evaluated at the end of the course for intermediate and advanced students only

The courses will take place on the training organization鈥檚 premises.

PARTICIPATION INCENTIVES

Participants who attend at least 80% of the courses for a given session will receive a participation bonus corresponding to the pay of 50% of the training hours.听 The training organization will submit an attendance report to the institution at the end of each session.听
