Supporting Internships and Retention of Health Professionals on the Lower North Shore

PROJECT DESCRIPTION


Through the 91ÉçÇø Retention Project, the Coasters Association aims to enhance access to health and social services in English on the Lower North Shore by improving the recruitment and retention of English-speaking health and social services professionals. This will be accomplished by achieving the following objectives:

The established education network will implement a training and internship pilot project for the territory which will:

  • Support the CSSS in developing a training program at the CSSSBCN aimed at retaining the number of young professionals serving the population;
  • Support the development of a support system and intern integration system aimed at retaining the number of young professionals serving the population (i.e. buddy system, etc…)

Certification Program - Substance Abuse Counselling

PROJECT DESCRIPTION


The objective of this project is to fund staff tuition for obtaining certification in substance abuse counselling. This will enable Toxico-Stop to maintain CQA accreditation status and ensure that English-speaking clients receive residential and ambulatory counselling services based upon the latest research evidence and clinical practice guidelines in the area of substance abuse counselling.

The project will therefore aim to:

  • Promote activities within the health and social services network by:
    • Supporting Toxico-Stop in the development of partnerships with the 4 CSSS in Montréal’s East End. This partnership will enable Toxico-Stop to have better access to clinical services including visits from doctors and nurses at the detox centres;
    • Offering workshops on self-esteem, relapse prevention, general lifestyle skills, budgeting and role-playing in social reinsertion.
  • Promote activities within the education network by:
    • Offering conferences to parents and counselling services on the prevention of substance abuse to students within secondary schools of the English Montreal School Board (EMSB).

PROJECT TITLE


Professional Support for English-Speaking Students and Social Workers

ORGANIZATION

PARTNERS


This project will build on collaborations developed in the previous project supported by the Training and Retention of Health Professionals Project. The School of Social Work aims to work closely both with community organizations involved in strengthening access to health and social services in English and the establishment of the Québec network.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION


The project will:

  1. Promote social work placements for English-speaking students in the regions of Québec by establishing capacity in its fieldwork team to identify, orient, place, and support English-speaking students in health and social services establishments and community groups;
  2. Organize a community of learners amongst social work professionals serving the English-speaking population across Québec; and
  3. Disseminate and where necessary, develop high quality educational products through a variety of medium such as seminars, podcasts, webinars, and videoconferences.

Support for special supervision needs was provided in 2011-2012 and 2012-2013.

BUDGET ALLOCATED FOR 2010-2012: $25,500
