About MyResearch

Advance your library research skills: MyResearch is a series of workshops tailored to graduate and postdoctoral students.It consists of four modules for each of the following subject areas: 1) agriculture, environmental sciences andnutrition, 2) health and biological sciences, 3)physical sciences and engineering.

MyResearch Module 1: Research Foundationsnot offered in Winter 2024

Understand and locate different types of information produced at each stage of the research cycle. Learn advanced search strategies and techniques to make the best use of specialized resources for your discipline.

MyResearch Module 2: EndNote Essentials -not offered in Winter 2024

Learn to use EndNote: a powerful citation management program that will change the way you do research.

MyResearch Module 3: Getting Your Research Out -not offered in Winter 2024

Learn about issues and trends in scholarly publishing, and gain a better understanding of citation analysis tools and metrics

MyResearch by Discipline

Agriculture, environmental sciences & nutrition

Some of the specialized resources students will encounter in the sessions for Agriculture, Environmental Sciences and Nutrition disciplines include:

  • An overview of resources for searching the hard-to-find “grey literature” including theses, patents, standards, government information, etc.
  • In addition to the broadly applicable Web of Science and Scopus databases, students will be exposed to discipline-specific resources for searching the article literature tailored to their area of study (e.g. Cab Abstracts, PubMed, Compendex).
  • Issues in scholarly publishing, such as open access, and academic integrity are discussed. Students will also receive an introduction to citation metrics at author, article, and journal levels (including, for example, h-index and journal impact factor).

Health & biological sciences

Some of the specialized content we will cover in the Life Sciences MyResearch series include:

  • Searching Medline (via PubMed and Ovid) using Medical Subject Headings
  • An overview of grey literature resources including Canadian health statistics
  • Tips on keeping up with the latest developments in your field
  • Issues related to scholarly publishing such as open access and citation metrics at author, article, and journal levels (e.g. h-index and journal impact factor)

Physical sciences & engineering

Some of the content that students will encounter in the sessions for Physical Sciences and Engineering include:

  • Answering frequently asked questions on when and how to cite.
  • An overview of resources for searching the hard-to-find “grey literature,” including theses, patents, and standards.
  • Searching Web of Science and/or Compendex for articles on their topics, and receiving feedback from the instructors on their search strategies.
  • Creating an online concept map of their research projects using the CmapTools software.
  • Issues in scholarly publishing, such as open access and academic integrity. Students will also receive an introduction to citation metrics at the author, article, and journal levels (including, for example, the h-index and journal impact factor).
