Indigenous Candidates Pathway

The Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences welcomes applications from First Nations, Inuit and Métis students. We encourage you to self-identify in your application and to undergrad.dentistry [at] mcgill.ca (contact us) if you have any questions about our programs or processes. We also have a specific application pathway for Indigenous students as well as reserved seats in our DMD program. If you wish to be considered for this specific application pathway, please undergrad.dentistry [at] mcgill.ca (contact our Admissions Office) and we will provide you with further instructions on how to proceed.

In order to be eligible to be considered for the Indigenous Candidate Pathway, you need to meet the following requirements:

Requirements

  • Have recognized status as Indigenous:
    • Be First Nations under the Indian Act (RSC, C1-5) or Inuit (registered in the Inuit client registry) and have confirmed status as a member ofa First Nations or Inuit community;
    • OR, beregistered to one of the Métis Registries recognized by the Métis National Council: Métis Nation of Ontario, Métis Nation of Alberta, Manitoba Metis Federation, Métis Nation British Columbia and Métis Nation – Saskatchewan.
  • Declare your First Nations, Inuit or Métis status on your application form;
  • Have a minimum CGPA of 3.2/4.0;
  • Meet all other academic requirements for admission to the DMD program;
  • Submit your application by November 1st and all supporting documents by November 3rd.

Selection Process

The application will be holistically reviewed by the Indigenous Admissions Advisory Committee (IAAC) using the following components:

  • Standardized curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Personal Statement
  • CASPer results
  • Basic science prerequisites

The top ranked candidates will be invited to the interviews: Multiple Mini-Interviews (MMI) and Individual interview with members of the Indigenous Admissions Advisory Committee.

For candidates recommended by the Indigenous Admissions Advisory Committee after the interviews, offers will be made based on the MMI performance.

Please note that candidates in this pathway will also be considered for the general cohort seats based on their residency status (Quebec resident or Canadian citizen).


Required documentation

Candidates who wish to be considered for Indigenous reserved seats will be required to submit documentation to support their declaration of Indigenous ancestry. One of the following is considered acceptable:

  • a certified copy of your Status card;
  • a certified copy of your Metis membership card from one of the 5 recognized provincial organizations;
  • your roll number or any other proof accepted by Inuit communities

91's First Peoples' House provides a sense of community and a voice for Indigenous students who have left their communities to study at 91. A “home away from home,” First Peoples’ House offers a mentoring program, computer facilities, guest lectures, elder visits, academic counselling, and an ever-expanding resource centre as well as housing.

The Indigenous Student Advisor is available to answer any questions you might have about course registration, exam preparation, financial aid, and more. The Indigenous Health Professions Program facilitates Outreach visits and programs for youth, and supports prospective Indigenous applicants to all health professions programs at 91.

Award for Indigenous Undergraduate Students

91 OKÒN:RA UNDERGRADUATE AWARD for Indigenous students in full-time studies in any 91 undergraduate degree program, including Dental Medicine (DMD). Please view the requirements and deadlines on the Funding for Indigenous Undergraduate Students page.
