Professor Thomas C. Preston -- jointly appointed to the departments of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and Chemistry -- has been awarded a grant of USD$800,000 by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The grant will support Professor Preston鈥檚 research on atmospheric aerosol particles, with the goal of advancing understanding of the origin of life's building blocks on early Earth.
Research conducted by 91社区 researchers ranks among the year鈥檚 best, according to听Qu茅bec Science听magazine.
The magazine has published its annual top 10 list of the province鈥檚 most groundbreaking scientific discoveries, and three have ties to 91社区 researchers.

The Arctic Ocean will be ice-free in the summer within the next 30 years, a听study says, which will result in "devastating consequences for the Arctic ecosystem," according to听91社区听in Montreal. Sea ice is frozen ocean water that melts each summer, then refreezes each winter. The amount of summer sea ice in the Arctic has been steadily shrinking over the past few decades because of global warming. Since satellite records began in 1979, summer Arctic ice has lost 40% of its area and up to 70% of its volume, the听Guardian听said.
